FAITH HEALER by Brian Friel
Gunston Arts Center Theatre Two
The dark memory tale of The Fantastic Francis Hardy, (Eric Lucas) a faith healer, is revealed through his own confession, as well as from disclosures made by his wife Grace (Kerry Waters Lucas) and their friend Teddy (Mick Tinder). Through the splendor of Irish writing at its most poignant and lyrical best, this brutal and moving play takes you to the edge of beauty and loss and on a search for meaning.

Meanwhile, long-suffering Teddy (Mick Tinder), the cockney manager, tries to keep Hardy's tattered show on the road while playing emotional nursemaid to the healer and his woman. Tinder has a wider dynamic range to wander, effectively combining the promoter's tacky show-business affectations and surface charm with what might be the only unconditional love Friel allows these poor people.- By Michael J. Toscano - The Washington Post
Tinder’s turn as Teddy brings a welcome light touch to the proceedings. Teddy is first and foremost a showman who has no more illusions regarding Frank and his skills than he had for the bagpipe-playing dog he managed earlier in his career - Doug Krentzlin, Washington Examiner
- Teddy (Mick Tinder), a pragmatist who lulls the faith healer's audiences with a recording of Fred Astaire's “The Way You Look Tonight.” Teddy, the play's most level-headed and sympathetic character, has learned to roll with Frank's mood swings, alcoholic binges and philandering. by Brian Trompeter - The Sun
- Irish playwright Brian Friel’s monologue play presents great opportunities for three actors and these three take full advantage. Each creates a strong character with identifiable traits that make the person human, not just a dramatic device... Mick Tinder sets himself apart from the pair by adopting a slightly cockney tinged English accent appropriate to the manager of tours on the eastern side of the Irish Sea. All three succeed in capturing and holding the audience's attention. Reviewed by Brad Hathaway - Potomac Stages |
